Beginners Guide to Cannabis

A guide to Cannabis and its types including Indica, Sativa and Hybrid types of Cannabis.

Cannabis (also known as Marijuana and Weed) is a popular plant belonging to the Cannabaceae family. It has psychoactive properties in the sense that it can alter brain function, mood, behaviour, and consciousness.  Cannabis can be broken into 3 main categories: Indica strain, sativa strain and hybrid strain.

When did Cannabis become Legal in Canada?

As of October 17, 2018, people above the age of 19 can legally buy recreational cannabis in Canada from a weed dispensary. While both medicinal and recreational cannabis is illegal in most parts of the world, it is becoming increasingly legal in many countries. Countries like Australia, Croatia, Canada, the Netherlands, the United States, and many other countries have legalized cannabis for recreational and medicinal use. Many other countries are also in the process of legalizing cannabis use.

The Effects of Cannabis

For hundreds of years, people have used cannabis for medicinal, spiritual, and recreational purposes. Cannabis changes your state of consciousness and can make you feel happy and exhilarated. Other common effects are increases in relaxation, euphoria and creativity.

Medicinal uses of cannabis include pain relief for illnesses such as arthritis and cancer, and relief from symptoms associated with chemotherapy. Cannabis can also offer relief to people living with epilepsy, glaucoma, and asthma.

Components of Cannabis

Cannabis contains over 500 compounds, which are collectively referred to as cannabinoids. The two main cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol  (CBD). THC has mood-altering effects, also known as psychoactive properties and is responsible for the ‘high’ that people feel when they consume cannabis. CBD, on the other hand, is non-psychoactive as it does not make you feel ‘high.’ It however, helps with anxiety, nausea, and seizures. CBD can also help minimize inflammation. Cannabis products may contain THC or CBD. Most will contain a mixture of the two.

Categories of Cannabis

There are three main categories of cannabis, namely sativa strains, indica strains, and hybrid strains. While both sativa weed and indica weed have been cultivated since the 18th century, many hybrid cannabis strains have histories that are more recent.

Indica Weed

The cannabis indica plant is characterized by thick coats of resin covering the upper leaves to promote flowering and protect the flowering tops. There is a whole range of indica weed flavors to choose from, including Granddaddy Purple, Northern Lights, and Purple Haze to mention a few. Indica weed strains typically make you want to relax, catch a movie, and spend some quality time on the couch.  Visit our indica strain page for more information.

Sativa Weed

Sativa weed is a little different from indica strains. While indica weed makes you want to sit around and relax, sativa weed often stimulates and energizes you. It also uplifts your spirit and helps bring out your creative side.

Sativa weed strains also have high medicinal value. It can help people cope with mood disorders and acts as an alternative treatment for ADHD.  Another common medical use is to treat migraines and headaches. The cannabis sativa plant has small branches and can grow very tall. Like indica strains, sativa weed is also available in a variety of flavors including Lemon Haze, Jack Herer, and Sour Diesel. Visit our Sativa weed page for more information and more strains..

Hybrid Weed

Want to experience the best of both sativa and indica weed? Try a crossbreed of the two worlds by using hybrid cannabis strains. Hybrid cannabis strains offer a combination of relaxing and energizing effects of its parents. Some popular hybrid cannabis to try out includes Banana Kush, Blue Dream, and Dutch Treat. Hybrid cannabis is achieved by cross breeding sativa and indica marijuana plants. Indica weed is said to originate from the Hindu Kush region in India, and is one of the more common cannabis strains in Canada. Visit our hybrid weed page for more information and more hybrid strains.
